Privacy Policy — Honest Fern

Short version

Across every Honest Fern app, the defaults are the same: no accounts, no first-party analytics, no cloud sync, and no email capture. App data such as favorites and settings stays on your device. Network features and third-party SDKs are disclosed in each app's section below.

If an app in our portfolio does something different from those defaults, it is spelled out in the per-app section below.

Our privacy defaults (every Honest Fern app)

Every app we ship follows these defaults. Anything that breaks one of them is called out explicitly in the per-app section below.

No accounts or sign-up. None of our current apps asks for an email, phone number, or password.
No analytics SDK. We do not integrate Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Sentry, or any other event-tracking or crash-reporting SDK.
No cloud sync. Your data lives on your device only. We do not run a backend that stores user data.
No email capture. When an app offers a "notify me" or "get in touch" path, it uses a mailto: link, not a form that sends your email to a server.
Open data sources only. If an app needs network data, it uses public, license-clean sources (Unlicense, CC0, MIT) and never requires an API key or account.
HTTPS only. Every outbound request goes over TLS. No plaintext traffic, no certificate exceptions.

Currency Converter Android · com.honestfern.currency_converter

Currency Converter is the first Honest Fern app. It follows every default above and adds one thing: non-personalised advertising via Google AdMob, which you can remove with a one-time in-app purchase. Details below.

Data stored on your device

Rates cache — exchange rates you've already loaded, kept on-device so the app works offline.
Chart history cache — historical rate points, kept on-device for the same reason.
Your settings — default base currency, decimal places, dark-mode preference, selected currency list, favorites. All stored locally; never uploaded.
AdMob data — Google Mobile Ads may process IP address, ad/device identifiers, app interactions, and diagnostics for advertising, measurement, and fraud prevention. Honest Fern requests non-personalised ads. Where required, the app presents Google's consent/privacy controls before requesting ads.

The app does not collect your name, email, phone, address, contacts, photos, location, microphone, camera, health, or any other device sensor data.

Data the app transmits

The app makes outbound HTTPS requests to:

Frankfurter / European Central Bank — fiat exchange rates. Free public service, no API key, no account. (frankfurter.dev)
fawazahmed0 / exchange-api — crypto exchange rates and historical data. Free public CDN, no API key, no account. (github.com/fawazahmed0/exchange-api)

These requests contain only the URL path needed to fetch the rate (for example, /v1/latest?base=USD). No device identifiers, no usage telemetry, no analytics payload.

Google AdMob SDK makes its own requests to Google's ad servers. See Google's privacy policy for what AdMob collects.

Frankfurter — Unlicense (public domain). Fiat rates.
fawazahmed0 / exchange-api — CC0-1.0 (public domain). Crypto rates and history.

Dev builds may additionally use CoinPaprika, which is for development only and is never shipped in the Play Store build.

Your choices in Currency Converter

Reset your Advertising ID — Android Settings → Google → Ads → Reset advertising ID.
Review ad privacy choices — use the privacy-options entry in the app when Google requires it, and Android's Privacy → Ads controls to reset or delete the Advertising ID.
Remove Ads — one-time in-app purchase inside the app, no Honest Fern account needed. After the entitlement is restored, the app stops requesting and displaying ads.
Clear all data — Settings → Data → Clear all data. Wipes the rate cache, chart history, and your settings on-device. Nothing was ever stored on a server.

Future apps placeholder

Honest Fern is a growing portfolio. Every new app will get a section here describing its data practices. If a new app does something different from the defaults above (uses a new SDK, makes a different kind of network request, integrates a third-party service), it is spelled out in its own section, not buried in the brand-level text.

If a new app does exactly what the defaults say and nothing more, its section will be a one-liner: "This app follows the Honest Fern privacy defaults above. It does not collect, store on a server, or transmit any data beyond what is needed for the features you use."

This website

Visiting the Honest Fern site is as private as using our apps. This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and loads no third-party resources — fonts, images, and icons are all served from this site itself, so your browser makes zero requests to anyone else. That is also why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing to ask consent for.

Hosting. The site is hosted by Vercel Inc. As with any web host, Vercel's infrastructure processes your IP address in server logs to deliver the pages and protect the service (legitimate interest). We do not access, enrich, or analyse these logs.
External links. Links to other sites (for example our data providers listed above) are plain links — nothing is loaded from them until you choose to click.
Contact. A verified support address will be published with the production domain before the public release. This preview does not accept contact or privacy requests yet.

Children's privacy

No Honest Fern app is directed at children under 13. Currency Converter is declared for a 13+ target audience and does not ask users for their age or knowingly collect children's data.

Your choices (across all apps)

Clear an app's data — Android Settings → Apps → [Honest Fern app] → Storage → Clear data. Per-app specifics (if any) are in the per-app section above.
Reset your Android Advertising ID — Android Settings → Google → Ads → Reset advertising ID. (Only relevant for apps that show ads.)
Uninstall — uninstalling an app removes all of its on-device data permanently. We have no server-side copy to delete because we have no server-side copy.

Changes to this policy

If the data practices change, this page will be updated with a new "Last updated" date. Per-app sections are updated when an individual app's practices change; the brand-level defaults above only change when a new app introduces something genuinely new across the portfolio. Significant changes are surfaced in each affected app's release notes.

Honest Fern is the app brand of an independent software developer based in Switzerland, publishing under his own name on the app stores; it is not a separate legal entity. For this website and all Honest Fern apps, the developer is the data controller. The developer's registered publishing name is shown on each app's store listing.

You can exercise your data protection rights (access, correction, deletion, objection) through the production contact address once published. Because neither this site nor our apps store personal data on our servers, most requests are resolved by pointing to the on-device controls described above. You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority — in Switzerland the FDPIC, or your local data protection authority in the EU/EEA.
